Midem 2001 and the success of French Music abroad At the end of the 80s, the success of French artists abroad was limited to Charles Aznavour, Nana Mouskouri, Sacha Distel and others artists representing instrumental pop music. Since the application of the 40% quota of French music on the radio, record labels have signed numerous artists. The development of investments in France and the improved quality of production, permitted French producers to better affront international competition. We therefore saw French Artists conquering an international scene such as Daft Punk, Modjo, Les Nubians, Mc Solar, Tahiti 80, Air and Alex Gophe. The result is simple. In 1992, the best record sales for French records abroad was situated at around 1.5 million units. In 1999 the ensemble of Francophone artists sales abroad represented 34 million units and the French Bureau in UK and US are still working at it.
