SPOOKS Interview

Everyone is deciding to have a chat with Phatmag and now we drop in on Spooks to find out if they really are spooky.

Spooks: We were cool yesterday. We had a little difficulty coming in the day before yesterday....we missed the flight.

Phatmag: Arrh. Where were you coming from?

Spooks: Where were we? Amsterdam

Phatmag:What were you guys doing out there? More shows, performances and stuff

Spooks: It was more like doing promotions. We're on a promo tour right now. It's like things are going really well for us over here you know. So it's like... we were supposed to be back in the US for a minute and then it's like one country will say we want you over here you know? We had a good opportunity to get on TV and radio and really set up to because we're trying to advertise because we have this tour coming in April you know what I'm saying.

Phatmag: Are you going to be doing a whole European thing?

Spooks: Yeah - April we have a European tour coming called Hijacking the Planet Tour. You go on our website www.spooks.net and check it out. Check out the dates. We're starting off at The Shepherds Bush Empire so it's gonna be tight.

Phatmag: Why is it called Hijacking the Planet?

Spooks: The name of the tour?

  Phatmag: Yeah

Spooks: That's like a saying that we had for a while.... like you know....actually it was the name of our demo. We had a 10 song demo before we even had a record deal and that's what we called it. We called it Hijacking the Planet because it was funny like.... you know, we had a lot of the press here in the UK on us and it seemed like all the critics crucified us because we say stuff like....we'll have statements like Raw or some other script or Hijacking the Planet or whatever. I'm like yo man, this is hip hop. Hip hop people fuck on crack. This shit ain't Barry Manilow know what I'm saying. This music sparks from bragging. You know it's funny, 'cos I would sue the press yesterday so you got me in a good mood. I'm gonna say this, I'm having a conversation with you....

Phatmag: Yeah that's fine yeah

Spooks: ....but a lot of writer's they measure they're writing ability by how well they can dis somebody. I mean flowery words they can use. But what I want to say is you know like.... we say terms like Hijacking the Planet in terms of other script. You know hip hop comes from a statement of bragging and a lot of critics, because they don't understand hip hop, they tend to say if there's bragging that that somehow takes away from the product or where it's good. What I'm saying is it doesn't because when hip hop started out, a lot of people used to brag but it's how clever you use the words you use to brag. That's where you find the skill. And I'll give you another example, it's just like for instance if you look at like the blues, people who play the blues like BB King. The notes he plays in the blues is like the same notes. He plays like the same you know 9/10 notes know what I'm saying, over and over and over again. But it's the fact that he plays them so many different ways you know what I'm saying. no body goes 'arh, look at BB King. He just keeps playing the same notes.' No they go 'he's a master blues soloist.' But when it comes to hip hop, they go 'oh they keep....'. You fail to understand where the harm lies so I just wanted to put that out there. But that's a little digression. What is Hijacking the Planet Tour. It's coming and it's called Hijacking the Planet. It's what's up man. We're gonna be live. We're gonna bring our band and our DJ
