Phatmag: So where did the name Spooks come from. What's that all about.
Spooks: Well a Spook is like a word for agent. Somebody that infiltrates an organisation but the term Spook is because their identity is something that is not really. Whatever you think their identify is, it probably is, but it's different. And when it comes t the CIA, with any CIA agent, their identity is a morphis. You know that you don't know what it is, so it's almost like they don't exist you know. That's the term Spook. We came across the name from this navel called the Spook is Set by the Door by Sam Greeny which basically dealt with this guy who was recruited by the CIA but it turned out he was the Spook COs he actually spooked the CIA. They didn't know what he was going to become because basically he was black, they put him in the mail room. But he had all the skills and took those skills back and prepared his community for the revolution. And when we kind of look at that, we were like that's kind of like us because at the time, we were going through the stresses of.... we had a mission to come together and stuff. We were like you know, that's like us. We wanted to do.....we felt like we were like agents. We always felt like..... because we're all doing solo things. We came together like agents. Like we always planned this mission and our mission was to shake up the industry - to penetrate it and shake it up. So we just thought that the only appropriate name for us was Spooks.
Phatmag: What about your individual names? Where did that come from?
Spooks: Arh man. Well, my name is Hypno and actually I think I used to be a wicked hypnotist - that's a little school stuff I'm giving you. But no. I used to be the Hypno because of the fact that I'm really into psychotherapy and all the things that deal with subliminal things and things that's underneath the thoughts. The subliminal conscious and all that and that's the way I approach my musical things too. I try to put things in there that's subliminal and after a while you'll realise what it is. S that's me.
Spooks: My name is Mr. Booka-T. I had Mr. in front of it because that's what my family called me at home. It's like a childhood name. Everyone calls me Mr. My real name is Booka-T, so it's Mr. Booka-T. It is also Picasso. I'm and illustrator. I went to high school for art, college for art you know. In high school, we all had aliases for different arts so instead of Picasso, they would call me Bookaso from Booka-T. It also describe the way I like to write lyrics which is.....I believe you should always talk about what you know so that's life. So basically I try to depict harsh... the pictures of reality. Paint harsher pictures of reality with lyrics. Sometimes pleasant pictures of reality you know.
We're on to Water. Water is a character because he like....Glen is crazy fun. He does a lot of voices. It's like you can be talking and you leave and he'll just start doing you. He can do anyone - you know cartoon characters, he'll do your parents you know. He can do anything. So like he changes form like water no matter what container you put water in....
You have Ming-Xia. Me....I would say her voice sounds like an Asian instrument but she was really young. She sings but her voice....like she mimics sounds. Like we play the violin and she can do whatever the violin's doing with her voice, so for lyrics people started calling her Big Shots ??? because her eyes looked Asian or something.
With Jo Davis, his real name is Jo Davis. We call him Vengeance because Jo's a real confrontational type of guy. But you know it's a good thing because we're a pretty cool bunch - laid back, kinda nice at times. But, if somebody was going to jump on that ass, it would probably be Jo Davis first because he's just like that. Even with us he's always....
